Cost of a Home Elevator – Greater Chicago Area
Are the stairs in your home becoming difficult to navigate? Have you considered adding an elevator to your home? A residential elevator is often assumed to be an expensive addition to a home. However, when compared to downsizing and moving to a single level home with all the associated costs, adding a residential elevator can be a very affordable option.
How Much Does a Home Elevator Cost?
On average, home elevators can cost between $28,000 and $35,000 depending upon floors served, the configuration of the elevator car and other considerations. The prices that we quote for our customers include tax, permits, shipping, and installation fees. Other dealers may list a price that is lower than the price range we have given; however, their price may not include the above items.
Our prices, however, usually do not include engineering and architectural costs, or the renovations to your home that are required to accommodate your new elevator. We have excellent relationships with many building contractors and architects to help your project go smoothly and on time.

In the meantime, we listed the factors that have an effect on the cost of a home elevator, so that you understand what you will be paying for.
Types of Home Elevators:
To The Top sells and installs both traditional and through the floor (shaft-less) residential elevators
A through the floor elevator is an innovatively designed elevator that literally travels through the floor without an enclosure around it. This style elevator is less expensive than a standard home elevator because it has many more standard features and does not require the construction of a hoistway. It provides homes with more usable space and matches the décor of your floor when it is fully down, and ceiling when it is fully up. The two brands that we offer for the through the floor elevators are Wessex and Savaria.

Traditional Home Elevator Cost Factors:
Traditional Home Elevators are enclosed in a hoistway and when not in use look like a closet from the outside. The brands that we offer for the traditional elevator models are Waupaca and Savaria. Both manufacturers have a number of styles and design options available, which allow you to pick a design that blends in with the decor of your home. Below are factors to think about when considering a traditional home elevator:
Type of Drive System:
The drive systems that are used for the home elevators we offer are hydraulic, winding drum, geared counterweight, and gearless counterweight. The type of drive system that is utilized typically does not have a material effect on price.
The Number of Stops and Travel Distance:
The elevators that we install in homes in Chicago, northeast Illinois, southeast Wisconsin and northwest Indiana serve 2 – 6 levels. The cost increases with each additional stop and travel distance. Up to 50 feet of travel is allowed by code.
Car and Landing Configuration:
An elevator car can be designed with one door, opposite doors, or adjacent doors. However, it is the most cost-effective for each level to load on the same side of the car if possible.
Type of Gate and Doors:
To The Top offers a variety of car gate and landing door options. This includes accordion car gates with decorative solid panels or all-metal panels.
Also available are sliding commercial elevator-style car and landing doors.
Automated Options: the car and landing doors can be provided as fully automatic. This upgrade provides easy access for power chair users and wheelchair users.
Elevator Cab: Type of Finish:
There are a number of finish options available for the inside of the elevator cab, including melamine, wood or glass, and very décor complimentary millwork and raised panel options.
